About The Southwest Brooklyn Tenant Union
SWBTU is a tenant-led organization that seeks to build community amongst tenants to defend ourselves against displacement in the fight for affordable housing. What We Do
Our mission is to empower tenants through education, community action, and policy advocacy.
-
At SWBTU, we value tenant-led organizing, where tenant union members play a critical role in recruiting, training, and educating community members about tenant rights and housing justice in NYC and across New York State.
-
We believe it’s essential for our members to understand the historical and political conditions of NYC’s profit-driven real estate industry, which has operated under the model of racist discrimination, oppression, exclusion, and rampant displacement.
Our monthly membership meetings emphasize political education through know-your-rights trainings and workshops to situate tenants in the historical context of tenant organizing and teach them how they can organize for truly affordable and just housing
-
The Southwest Brooklyn Tenant Union participates in city, statewide, and national coalitions that organize to pass legislation with specific focus on improving the lives of tenants
